Arlington, Va. —The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Board of Governors re-elected Robert C. Jones, DC, of Albuquerque, N.M., to a second one-year term as ACA president. The election took place last week in Washington, D.C., during the association’s annual meeting, Engage 2020.
The board, which consists of five chiropractors and one public member, also re-elected Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD, of Minneapolis, Minn., to serve a second one-year term as ACA vice president.
Under Dr. Jones’ leadership this past year, ACA embarked on collaborative advocacy and education initiatives with other healthcare provider groups to address low back pain and the opioid epidemic and was successful in getting legislation introduced in Congress (H.R. 3654) that would make it easier for Medicare beneficiaries to access chiropractic’s non-drug approach to pain management. In addition to his many years in ACA governance, Dr. Jones is a past president of the New Mexico Chiropractic Association, sits on the Board of Trustees of the University of Western States in Portland, Ore., and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
Dr. Maiers is a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, Minn. She serves as NWHSU executive director of research and innovation and is a principal at the school’s Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy. She has been integral to ACA’s work to advance research, evidence-based care and clinical guidelines review and was acknowledged recently for her successful efforts to increase the voice and participation of early-career doctors across the association.
Continuing on the ACA board are Kathy Boulet, DC, of Lewiston, Maine; Leo Bronston, DC, MAppSc, of Onalaska, Wis.; Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, of Little Rock, Ark.; and public member Steven C. Roberts, Sr., JD, LLM, of St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Jones appointed Dr. Boulet to continue as board liaison to the ACA Nominating Committee and Roberts to continue in his role as chair of the ACA Finance Committee.
ACA Engage is the premier national conference for doctors of chiropractic, chiropractic assistants and chiropractic students. ACA Engage (formerly called NCLC) has a long history of bringing together industry leaders from all over the country to meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. The program has expanded to include a robust variety of education offerings (with CE credits available), speeches from respected thought leaders and panel discussions that delve into important topics. The new name reflects the association’s efforts to position the chiropractic profession for success by engaging a new generation of doctors with these exciting education, career and leadership-development opportunities.
