How is the topic you are presenting at Engage 2024 relevant to today’s chiropractor?

Drew Sams

Many doctors will have wrestlers as patients in their practices, and many of those patients will be adolescent athletes. Understanding key concepts of RED-S and their implications with adolescent development will make them better providers.

What makes you an expert in this area?

We both have personal and professional experience dealing with wrestlers on a daily basis. [Dr. James] began working with his collegiate wrestling team in 2018 and Drew started wrestling at 3 years old and now coaches.

What is one takeaway from your presentation that Engage 2024 attendees will not want to miss?

Increased knowledge and awareness of RED-S, in general. While our talk is focusing on adolescent wrestlers, don’t lose sight of the fact that this can affect all athletes, both males and females.

How will what attendees take away from your presentation make them better doctors?

This presentation will enable attendees to be better informed when working with this population of athletes.

Members of the ACA specialty councils are instrumental in developing ACA’s cutting-edge education programming at Engage 2024. What benefits have you personally experienced from being a specialty council member?

It has been incredible getting to know colleagues from all over the country, and it has allowed us to have a platform with the “Nutrition on a Mission” podcast to interview providers and athletes from all over the country sharing their stories of nutrition and performance.
