Thursday, Jan. 23 News in Brief
Chiropractic’s Day on Capitol Hill
The Wisconsin delegation after their meeting.
Managing congressional visits under extreme weather conditions is nothing new for ACA members. They have traversed intense snowstorms, thick fog, and heavy rains in the past. This year, we can add sub-freezing temperatures to the list. At the start of the day, the temperature in Washington, D.C., registered around 21 degrees, but that didn’t stop ACA members from completing more than 250 meetings with legislators.
The Washington delegation met with Sen. Patty Murray’s staff.
The topic of discussions was the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 539/S. 106), reintroduced just last week. Members were armed with issue briefs, data and other resources to share with members of Congress and their legislative staffers, and they were also ready to talk about how important access to chiropractic services is for their patients.
“The energy [on Capitol Hill] was very positive…we got a lot of engagement and interest from senators, representatives and their staff regarding [H.R. 539],” said Kathy Boulet, DC, a member of the ACA Legislative Committee. “Students I engaged with were very professional; it was really nice to see their engagement and interest in being involved in lobbying for chiropractic.”

Likewise, chiropractic students came away from the day feeling energized from talking with their elected representatives. “I love how empowered students are to be part of [advocacy]. It makes me feel part of a larger movement and part of the profession even though I haven’t quite graduated yet,” said Jordan Jacobson, a student at Southern California University of Health Sciences.
In his Capitol Hill Briefing last night, John Falardeau, ACA senior vice president of public policy and advocacy, urged doctors and students to follow up with the offices they visit after they return home, and continue to nurture the relationship. He suggested inviting legislators and their staff to chiropractic offices and school clinics to learn more about chiropractic.
Falardeau also reminded everyone to fill out the Capitol Hill Meeting debrief form, to let ACA know how their meetings went and whether any follow-up is necessary.

Congressional Reception
Following Hill visits, ACA members headed back to the Omni Shoreham Hotel to relax and share their experiences on the Hill with friends, new and old, at the Congressional Reception. This year, the event featured a photo booth for added fun!
PAC Breakfast Features Hon. Steve Sutherland
Capitol Club members discuss fundraising over breakfast.
Over 60 members of the ACA PAC Capitol Club gathered this morning to listen to the Honorable Steve Sutherland, former member of Congress and now a member of the Capitol Hill Consulting Group, discuss the importance of political fundraising and how it relates to moving vital legislation like the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act. The ACA PAC remains the primary chiropractic political action committee in Washington, designed to promote federal legislators who support chiropractors and their patients.
