Clinical Management of Exertional Rhabdomyolysis

The benefits of exercise are well documented, but occasionally chiropractors may run across a patient who has crossed into unhealthy territory resulting in exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER), a serious condition where muscle cells are damaged from excessive exercise. ER can cause severe pain, swelling and weakness, but it can also be tricky to diagnose. An expert on the condition, James Geiselman, DC, MS, DACBN, CCSP, ICSC, CES, CNC, NREMT, will review ER diagnosis, treatment and prevention during his presentation at ACA’s upcoming annual meeting, ACA Engage 2024.

Look for Dr. Geiselman’s presentation, “Clinical Management of Exertional Rhabdomyolysis for the Chiropractic Physician” on the Engage 2024 schedule and register today to attend! Below, the ACA Blog learns more about Dr. Geiselman and what attendees can expect.

How is the topic you are presenting at Engage 2024 relevant to today’s chiropractor?

Dr. Geiselman: Chiropractors may be responsible for managing or co-managing patients with exertional rhabdomyolysis. It is important to understand the clinical significance of this condition and how to safely have the athlete return to play (RTP).

What makes you an expert in this area?

Dr. Geiselman: I have co-managed this condition in practice and have published peer-reviewed research on the topic.

What is one takeaway from your presentation/topic that Engage 2024 attendees will not want to miss?

Dr. Geiselman: Exertional rhabdomyolysis is often difficult and may be diagnosed incorrectly based on current criteria. This presentation will provide practitioners with a better understanding of current diagnostic criteria and ways that we can prevent this condition from occurring.

How will what attendees take away from your presentation make them better doctors?

Dr. Geiselman: Providers will feel better co-managing these patients with other healthcare providers, and providers will feel better informed and confident in preventing this condition with their patients.

Members of the ACA specialty councils are instrumental in developing ACA’s cutting-edge education programming at Engage 2024. What benefits have you personally experienced from being a specialty council member?

Dr. Geiselman: It has been incredible getting to know colleagues from all over the country.
