NCLC’s education sessions feature some of the chiropractic profession’s most respected thought leaders and content experts. Many sessions also offer continuing education credits. ACA strongly recommends that those attending NCLC take advantage of the quality education programs offered, as they are included in the price of registration. Today’s News in Brief
A Year Later, New Governance Model Is Yielding Positive Results
In remarks to the House of Delegates this morning, ACA President N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC, discussed the historic governance changes ACA implemented one year ago and the positive impact they have made in that short amount of time. “It’s made ACA more efficient, effective and responsive in serving the members and the healthcare community,” he said.
While Dr. Tuck acknowledged some “bumps in the road” along the way, he confirmed that the new governance model has enabled ACA to become more inclusive in its decision-making process, incorporating feedback from delegates and members on important projects. He pointed specifically to feedback that the ACA Board of Governors has received over the past year from the House of Delegates regarding ACA’s Choosing Wisely recommendations, which he said will be voted on at the next board meeting.
Operations Report from ACA Headquarters
ACA Executive Vice President Karen Silberman shared additional information on the association’s operations with delegates. She said the financial audit ACA underwent last year came back positive, providing evidence that the association’s finances are strong. Silberman reviewed some of the new programs and collateral developed to help attract and retain members. Among them: Learn ACA (a new online platform offering continuing education courses), updated patient education resources, and new brand-related marketing collateral.
ACA Vice President Jane Zaretskie followed Silberman with details about some of ACA’s membership strategies and that year-over-year membership has grown. She also discussed a new membership opportunity for new graduates that would allow them to prepay for five years of ACA membership at a 50 percent discount. Finally, Zaretskie announced that ACA would extend a 25% discount on Governors’ Advisory Cabinet membership to NCLC attendees throughout the course of the annual meeting.
Legislative Action/PAC Reports
Keith Overland, DC, chairman of the ACA Legislative Advisory Board, presented a brief report on NCLC’s Advocacy Day. He said that chiropractors and students made 350 visits to congressional offices yesterday. In addition, The ACA-PAC has met with and conducted fundraising events for members of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee to strengthen support for chiropractic legislation. Dr. Overland stressed that those who make congressional visits during NCLC should fill out a lobbying debrief form, available on the NCLC app as well as at www.acatoday.org/feedback to share important information from their meetings. He also encouraged delegates and others to follow up later with members of Congress they visit to continue to discuss issues, answer questions and nurture relationships.
Lewis Squires, DC, chairman of the ACA Political Action Committee (ACA-PAC) also urged delegates and members to support the ACA-PAC with contributions. While donations are up 26 percent from the last election cycle, the ACA-PAC still trails behind other prominent healthcare PACs. Dr. Squires also pointed out that ACA’s Key Contact program needs new members who can be matched with one of the 101 freshmen members of Congress.
Deliberative Session Generates Important Feedback
The House of Delegates spent time today in a deliberative session designed to enable deeper discussions on issues important to the profession and ACA members. Delegates voted in advance of the HOD meeting to focus on three issues: clinical guidelines, ethics in advertising and pathways to payment. A professional facilitator helped the leaders engage in discussions with their colleagues that generated ideas as well as questions that will inform ACA’s future planning and actions.
Board of Governors Elections
Members of the ACA House of Delegates today voted to fill two seats on the association’s six-member Board of Governors (BOG). Leaving the board is N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC, of Christiansburg, Va., whose one-year term on the board ended. Dr. Tuck also served as ACA president for the past year. Winners of today’s election are:
- Kathy Boulet, DC, of Lewiston, Maine
- Leo Bronston, DC, of Onalaska, Wis.
Following the election in the HOD meeting, the new BOG met to elect officers. They are:
- Robert Jones, DC, of Albuquerque, N.M., ACA President
- Michele Maiers, DC, MPH, PhD, of Minneapolis, Minn., ACA Vice President
Newly elected President Dr. Jones then made two presidential appointments:
- Steve C. Roberts, JD, LLM, of St. Louis, Mo., Finance Chair
- Kathy Boulet, DC, Nominating Committee Member
Continuing on the board is Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, of Little Rock, Ark.
Awards Presented
The Delegate of the Year Award was presented to Marcus Nynas, DC, of Billings, Mont. (pictured with award at right with ACA President N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC), for his extensive work in the advancement of the chiropractic profession through numerous state and national associations and committees.
The Alternate Delegate of the Year Award was presented to Kelly Golob, DC, of Olympia, Wash., for his tireless efforts to advance the chiropractic profession and for his extensive history of involvement with SACA and legislative issues.
The Flynn-Lynch Memorial Award, recognizing a member of the House of Delegates who has served no more than five years, was presented to Gary Estadt, DC, DACRB, DABCA, who has demonstrated a passion and drive in his work that has exceeded all expectations.
A special President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement was also presented to Kenneth Padgett, DC, former president of New York Chiropractic College. SACA Welcomes New National Executive Board
Congratulations to the 2019/2020 SACA National Executive Board! Elected to the board were the new SACA National Chair, James Walters of New York Chiropractic College, and National Vice Chair, Celeste Holder of the University of Bridgeport School of Chiropractic. Appointed were Legislative Chair, Kyle Koerner of Cleveland University, and Legislative Vice Chair, Holly Stephens of Southern California University of Health Sciences.
