How did you become interested in the topic you are presenting?
My work as a health care workforce regulator for the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners and as a chiropractic medicolegal consultant has presented me with opportunities to see both the highs and the lows of ethical behavior among health care professionals of all types, including DCs. The 40-plus years of my career have also seen the rise of evidence-based health care, and I have come to view these two motives—ethics and evidence—as inextricably linked.
What about your presentation topic (or you) may surprise people?
As licensed professionals, we are often made aware of major ethical lapses by our colleagues when their sad stories are revealed by board disciplinary actions or hit the front page of the local news. But it’s the ethical dimensions of everyday practice encountered in routine patient care that can and do improve clinical outcomes and enhance practice success.
Are there any new developments in your specialty/topic area that make your presentation at NCLC 2018 especially relevant or timely?
This presentation will focus on cognitive bias and the pernicious influence of the pharmaceutical industry on health care that is increasingly apparent in the pursuit of research and the development of clinical practice guidelines. Critical thinking is essential for chiropractic physicians in sorting through the evidence to help guide practice and assist patients in evidence-informed shared decision making that respects their values and expectations for treatment.
