How is the topic you are presenting at Engage 2022 relevant to today’s chiropractor?

Dr. Kissel and Dr. Carmichael: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects many millions of Americans, and its treatment is well within the scope of the doctor of chiropractic. This topic is a practical guide for expanding your practice to include effective treatment to patients who are already in your practice and who would benefit from your expertise. The GLA:D program was started in Denmark in 2013 and can be implemented by chiropractors in North America.

What makes you both the experts?

Dr. Kissel: I am a chiropractor who is trained in GLA:D management for hip and knee OA and I treat patients living with OA.

Dr. Carmichael: I hold a PhD in clinical science research from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The topic of my doctoral thesis encompassed rehabilitation of patients affected by osteoarthritis of the knee.

Can you share an anecdote to demonstrate how greater understanding of this topic can make a difference for patient care?

Dr. Kissel: I’ve seen patients start the GLA:D program who could barely walk upstairs and had a hard time getting up from a chair, and by six weeks later they really understand their condition, have the confidence to manage their OA, and the function to do so.

What practical knowledge or skills can attendees take away from your presentation and start using immediately in their practices?

Dr. Kissel and Dr. Carmichael: Attendees will learn an evidence-based approach to the management of knee OA and will be able to apply this directly to their patients and help them manage their OA. They will be better doctors by providing value-based care.

What do you enjoy about presenting educational programs?

Dr. Kissel: I love educating and providing evidence-based research that can help practitioners treat their patients. In the end, the focus is to do what is best for the patients and the community.

Dr. Carmichael: Nothing is more rewarding to me than serving others, and one of the best ways I can do this is by helping to make chiropractic practice more satisfying and rewarding through the application of high-quality science to commonly encountered clinical problems.
