Improving Your Notes: Tips from Someone Who’s Reviewing Them

Morgan Price, DC, is a staff chiropractor at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Division, as well as a medical legal summarizer with West Coast Chiropractic Experts. In the latter role, she works as part of team that reviews chiropractic patient records, giving her an insider’s perspective on the ways that doctors of chiropractic record their notes and how they could do better. Dr. Price will present “Improving Your Notes: Tips from Someone Who’s Reviewing Them” at Engage 2023.

Below, the ACA Blog learns more about Dr. Price and what doctors can expect from her Engage 2023 program.

How is the topic you are presenting at Engage 2022 relevant to today’s chiropractor?

Whether you’re new to practice or 30 years in, it is always relevant to get a refresher on today’s best practice guidelines and the highest level of evidence-based care that we have available to us.

What first made you interested in the topic?

As someone who is a part of a team that is contracted to review medical records, it’s important to me that we, as ACA chiropractors, are not only providing evidence-based, high-quality care for our patients, but also being able to portray that effectively to relevant third-party reviewers.

What practical knowledge or skills can attendees take away from your presentation?

There is an immediate “Monday morning application” in respect to being aware of some items that we look for when reviewing records that are easy to avoid or fix and should refine/improve your care, documentation, and getting paid for your services.

How will what attendees take away make them better doctors?

We should all strive to provide the highest quality and most evidence-informed care possible for our patients but keeping up on the literature can be challenging. This presentation aims to provide a refresher on best practices and give examples of common pitfalls that chiropractors find themselves in. With real examples, we’ll discuss duration of treatment, frequency of re-exams, appropriateness for imaging, treatment, co-management referrals, and much more.

What benefits do you gain from attending ACA Engage?

I have been a long-time attendee of ACA Engage since I was a student and have been lucky enough to present now in recent years. I always look forward to networking with my colleagues and meeting students.
