Engage 2021: Treating Concussion Beyond the Chiropractic Adjustment

Cindy M. Howard, DC, DABCI, DACBN, the owner of Innovative Health and Wellness Center in Orland Park, Ill., is past president of the ACA Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders and vice president of the ACA College of Pharmacology and Toxicology. She also serves on the medical advisory board of the Functional Medicine University. Dr. Howard will present “Treating Concussion Beyond the Chiropractic Adjustment” at this year’s virtual Engage 2021 conference. Registrants can participate in this live session on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET to ask questions. Below, ACA Blogs asks Dr. Howard what doctors can expect.

How is the topic you are presenting relevant to today’s chiropractor?

This is relevant because most if not all of us have treated patients with head injuries.  Sometimes they need additional support to help them heal faster and prevent long lasting symptoms.

Can the information you will share help doctors better navigate these challenging times in some way?

This topic will help doctors of chiropractic increase the tools in their practice and help them increase revenue.

What practical knowledge or skills can attendees take away from your presentation and start using immediately in their practices?

They will be able to recommend supplementation and discuss lifestyle and diet related to concussion with ease and confidence.

How have you adapted professionally to practicing during the pandemic? Have you learned any lessons that you can share?

I have adapted by staying open yet keeping my staff healthy and stepping up cleaning procedures although we were pretty great at this before.  I have made care more accessible through increasing availability to answer questions and through a telehealth platform that I can use anywhere. I have also provided education through social media on how to stay healthy and what to do if you get sick.  I educate on the medical research on COVID and make it easy to understand. We also started testing in the office, both COVID 19 PCR nasal swab and IGM and IGG antibody testing.  We have protocols for treatment to prevent, if exposed and if positive. I continue to teach on the topic as well to help other providers help their patients.

Is there anything else about you or your presentation that you think would be of interest to our readers?

I will make this simple so that you can take home a few clinical pearls and implement recommendations even if you are not currently doing nutrition or supplementation.
