Annual meetings are much anticipated in the association world, as members gather from across the country for professional development, advocacy and networking opportunities. However, with COVID-19 preventing large, in-person events, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) embarked on a plan to reinvent its annual meeting, ACA Engage, in a virtual format this year that not only enables the chiropractic community to connect, but also affords greater access to education programming and continuing education credits.

Being sensitive to cultural differences in your patient population not only can enhance patient care but also help expand your practice, according to ACA Engage 2020 presenter Gerald Stevens, DC, an associate professor at New York Chiropractic College. The Interprofessional Collaborative Spine Conference, set for Nov. 8-9 in Pittsburgh, Pa., will bring together members of the chiropractic, osteopathic medicine and physical therapy professions to tackle topics related to manual therapy and its use in treating low back pain and other conditions. As part of the presentation “Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) Competency, Safety and Risk Management Presentations,” Michael Seffinger, DO, a professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Western University of Health Sciences, discusses the osteopathic approach to ensuring the appropriateness and safety of cervical spine manipulation for patients.

From beginning to end, it was an eventful year that brought not only significant internal growth and change to the association but also important progress and achievements for several of ACA’s top legislative priorities.

The key to effective leadership is to speak to people’s “why.” For example, if you tell someone to attend NCLC, they will undoubtedly ask you for the details of the event. Normal. But the thought process doesn’t end there for them. Once you give them the “what” and “how” of the trip, they will filter this information through their “why” and determine if it is something worth doing...Leadership isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. Meaning, you will encounter people at all stages of willingness to engage and explore more, but it is your job to find them there.
