Q&A with NCLC 2019 Presenters: Dr. Jeffrey Sklar

ACA’s annual meeting, the National Chiropractic Leadership Conference, brings you cutting-edge, evidence-based education sessions featuring some of the chiropractic profession’s most respected thought leaders and content experts. Many sessions also offer continuing education credits. Here we pose questions to one of the presenters: Jeffrey Sklar, DC, director of chiropractic services, Eastern region, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. His presentation is titled, “Chiropractic, Integrative Oncology and Patient Centered Care.”

Q: How is the topic that you are presenting relevant to modern chiropractic practice? How will it help chiropractors be successful now, and into the future?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists cancer as the second leading cause of death in the United States. When conventional treatments fall short of patient expectations and create collateral damage in the form of side effects to the neuromusculoskeletal system, there is a widespread move by this underserved, over-medicated patient population toward more holistic approaches to help with quality-of-life issues. Moreover, as patients look for one-stop-shop healthcare, a collaborative, patient-centered approach is the key to giving people want they want and what they need. In an electronic world of Healthgrades and Yelp reviews, the chiropractor who thinks outside the box with a focus on collaboration with other disciplines is the doctor who is a true patient-centered care physician who will deserve top-star reviews.

Q: Are there any new developments in your specialty/topic area that make your presentation at NCLC 2019 especially relevant or timely?

Because side effects of treatment are typically under addressed by conventional oncology, it should be noted that therapies such as ReBuilder, L-Glutamine powder, acupuncture, Rapid release, and auricular therapy are known to improve quality of life for cancer patients suffering from an array of issues stemming from their treatment regimen.

Q: Who should attend your presentation and why?

Anyone interested in becoming more involved with treating cancer patients and embracing the tenet of patient-centered care will benefit from attending this presentation.

Q: What practical knowledge or skills can attendees expect to take away from your presentation?

Some key takeaways of my presentation will be the discussion of several side effects, such as nausea and neuropathy, and the approaches that I have used with great success in alleviating many patients’ complaints.

Q: What was the best career advice you ever received?

I remember a DC coming to Palmer during an early trimester. He told us not to restrict ourselves to the convention of dressing formal for work every day if that’s not who we are and encouraged us to be ourselves. He said that with this approach we will attract the patients that will most benefit from the care we have to offer. He taught us that being authentic unlocks that truth of ourselves and helps provide others with the healing they seek.

Dr. Sklar’s presentation, “Chiropractic, Integrative Oncology and Patient Centered Care,” takes place at NCLC on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at 3 p.m. ET. For complete conference information and schedules, click here.
