NCLC General Session: Essential Role of Chiropractors in Primary Care

Speaker Margaret Flinter, PhD, APRN, to share insights into how chiropractors make an impact at community health centers.

Margaret Flinter recalls how she and colleague James Lehman, DC, together realized the significant impact chiropractors could make in the community health setting: "As the epidemic of opioid use and addiction took hold in our state and country, we grappled with the need to study, identify and implement new ways to approach pain in its acute and chronic forms. We [began] to consider whether the formal integration of chiropractors in primary careparticularly in what we call

'safety net settings' such as community health centers that serve 24 million people across the countrywould be an effective and perhaps transformative strategy. And it has been."

Q&A with NCLC 2018 Presenters: Dr. Kevin Sharp

Practice compliance and success are not diametrically opposed!

After serving as the president of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association, Kevin Sharp, DC, a presenter at NCLC2018, realized that many of the chiropractors in his state lacked a clear understanding of how to effectively code and manage the business side of their practices. Since then, he has devoted himself to teaching thousands of doctors and their staff how to effectively code, document and be compliant in their practices in a way that motivates them. "When you can break down the barriers of this aspect of what we do, doctors can free themselves up to focus on patient care," he writes. "In addition, I show doctors how a compliant practice can be profitable—which many think is diametrically opposed! You can run a compliant practice and make it profitable at the same time."

Q&A with NCLC 2018 Presenters: Dr. James Cox

An early setback in his career inspired Dr. Cox to search for a better treatment for spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis is one of the most challenging spine pain conditions. Disc herniation and disc and facet degeneration are primary causes and represent major pain and disability in the world. "You will be surprised at the relief possible with distraction spinal manipulation," writes James Cox, DC, a presenter at NCLC 2018, who answers some questions about his upcoming talk. "Having had this condition with cauda equina syndrome personally (necessitating decompression laminectomy), my spine’s own care is the technique presented. It is a stimulus to study and apply superior spinal manipulation when it is your own condition. I started out in practice with a challenge of low back pain and sciatica in a patient, lived it myself and then devoted my life to seeking the best evidence-based clinical treatment for spinal stenosis."
