Meet the Speakers

 

Dr. Joel Carmichael

Joel P. Carmichael, DC, PhD, practices at the Center for Spine, Sport & Physical Medicine and at University of Colorado Health in Denver, Colo.. After earning his chiropractic degree from Logan University in 1985, he completed a one-year residency in chiropractic family practice in St. Louis, Mo. , and an integrated spine treatment rotation at Royal University Hospital and 4th Avenue Clinic in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He subsequently earned Diplomate status from the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. He served as a member of the medical team for U.S. beach volleyball in the 2012 Olympic Games and continues as a member of their medical support team. Joel is affiliated with the RESTORE research group at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where he completed a PhD in Clinical Science in 2021. He is currently affiliated with the orthopedic research teams at CU Sports Medicine and UC Health, Steadman Denver locally, and with a qualitative sports medicine research consortium at VU Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His interests include knee osteoarthritis, orthopedic rehabilitation, sport-related concussion and sports injury prevention, muscle activation, and the control of joint swelling after trauma and surgery. He has authored papers and lecture symposia on gait speed, neck pain in concussed athletes, athlete health protection, the diagnosis and treatment of spinal and lower extremity disorders, and a book chapter on elbow, hand, and wrist injuries in sport.  

 

Dr. Paul Duffy

Paul F. Duffy, DC, has been a practicing chiropractor for 32 years. He is currently the Division Chief of Chiropractic for Lehigh Valley Health Network-Coordinated Health, where he founded the Chiropractic Division in 1994. Since that time, he has been instrumental in the growth and integration of a multidisciplinary musculoskeletal group into a major hospital network. Dr. Duffy has been instrumental in the success of Coordinated Health’s Sports Medicine department. He has served as Team Chiropractor for Lehigh University for over 27 years and is a consultant to many high schools and colleges in the Lehigh Valley area. In addition, he has served in the Coordinated Health Occupational Medicine department as a panel provider for many Eastern Pennsylvania companies. Dr. Duffy’s focus has been the development of a collaborative team approach to spinal care. Since the early days of integrating chiropractic into a primarily orthopedic/physical therapy paradigm, he has fought for the equal inclusion and availability of chiropractic services in all spinal and sports medicine care. This has enabled Coordinated Health to develop one of the top spine programs in the region. Dr. Duffy serves on the State Legislative Committee for the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association and is an active participant in the American Chiropractic Association’s efforts, particularly lobbying on Capitol Hill.  

 

Dr. Ted Forcrum

Ted Forcum, DC, received a bachelor’s degree from Willamette University and a doctorate from the University of Western States. He is an NSCA-CSCS, Graston Technique Certified, NASM-CES, NASM-PES, Registered Trigenics Practitioner. He is a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Rehabilitation, and an Internationally Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. The ACA Council on Sports and Physical Fitness awarded Dr. Forcum the 1994-95 and 2004 Sports Chiropractor of the Year award. Dr. Forcum is the team chiropractor for the Portland Winterhawks WHL Hockey Team. He was medical staff for the 2015 USATF World Championships, 2008 Beijing U.S. Olympic Team, and 2007 Rio de Janeiro U.S. Pan American Team. He was president of the ACA Council on Sports and Physical Fitness from 2008-10. He has been in private practice since 1988, was on the Sports Master’s Program faculty at UWS and is a past board member for the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science.

 

Dr. Christine Foss

Christine A. Foss, DC, has a master’s degree in Sports Medicine from Old Dominion University, a Doctorate in Chiropractic from New York Chiropractic College, and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Health Sciences. She is a Certified Athletic Trainer, Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, Diplomate American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board, and an Internationally Certified Sports Chiropractor. She was named the 2020 American Chiropractic Association Sports Council Chiropractor of the Year. Dr. Foss is passionate about her work at Advanced Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy Center and Kid’s Therapy Center, both of which she established and co-owns. She has worked the World Games in Poland and the bobsleigh World Championships, both for FICS. She traveled with TEAMUSATF as medical staff and has also worked alongside prominent surgeons in the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Dr. Foss finds special interest in difficult cases and those patients that have had little success with conventional care, as well as lecturing on a variety of aspects of sports injuries. She is currently director and lead instructor of the New York Chiropractic College Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician program and education chair for Federation Internationale de Chiropractique du Sport.  

 

Dr. Kristen Hosaka

Kristen Hosaka, DC, is a chiropractor, Spinning Babies® Aware Practitioner and Dynamic Body Balancing practitioner who is passionate about helping pregnant people balance their bodies to create an easier passage for babies into this world. She strives to make birth better for the dyad and to help prevent birth trauma and subluxation through balanced, physiological births. Since 2009, she has attended over 200 births and countless labors while in private practice in the suburbs of Fort Worth, Texas. 

 

 

 

Dr. Jaclyn Kissel

Jaclyn A. Kissel, DC, is a Canadian-trained chiropractor; assistant professor, Division of Clinical Education at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC); and executive board member, Royal College of Chiropractic Sport Sciences Canada. She is currently working as primary clinician at CMCC and in private practice. As a lead GLA:D® clinician at CMCC, she is responsible for GLA:D® at the Sherbourne Health site. She has also led numerous research publications related to the chiropractic profession and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, pre-and post-natal injuries, and exercise therapy. Lastly, Dr. Kissel has also been a sideline therapist for numerous sporting events during her career.  

 

 

Dr. Christopher Knee

Christopher Knee, ND, MSc, is a naturopathic doctor, clinical researcher, and natural health and wellness expert from Ottawa, Canada. As research and education manager for Fullscript’s Integrative Medical Advisory Team (IMAT), he oversees clinical education, decision support, and research project and partnership activities across North America. Dr. Knee completed Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the University of Guelph in Human Kinetics and Nutritional Sciences and completed naturopathic training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has extensive research and industry experience, having worked with organizations such as Pfizer, Valeant Pharmaceuticals, the Ottawa Police Service, The Ottawa Hospital, and the University of Guelph. He has presented on the topics of dietary supplements, supplement quality, corporate wellness, immune health, cancer care, integrative medicine, and treatment adherence in several environments, including recent representation at the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) and American Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (AANP) annual conferences. Dr. Knee also maintains a part-time practice within a chiropractic-focused, multidisciplinary health clinic, where he focuses on dietary, lifestyle, and nutritional supplement management of digestive disorders and other common health conditions. 

 

Dr. James Leonard

James Farthing Leonard, DC, is an active clinician working for Crossover Health in a tech-enabled, direct-to-employer interdisciplinary clinic in Detroit, Mich. He received his Doctorate from Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa. James Leonard has served on multiple multidisciplinary task forces, including the Utah Coalition for Opioid Overdose Prevention, MIBAC Michigan Back Collaborative, and the ACA’s Opioid Legislative Action Committee. Furthermore, he spends time volunteering with World Spine Care, where he served as Clinic Supervisor in the Dominican Republic. James Leonard is passionate about systems design, interdisciplinary care, and intentional care coordination.  

 

 

Dr. Bobby Maybee

Bobby Maybee, DC, initially began the Forward-Thinking Chiropractic Alliance (FTCA) in 2014 as an attempt to change the landscape and conversation of the chiropractic profession on social media. Since then, the FTCA has gone on to create evidence-based content in a grassroots nature. FTCA’s evidence-based content is typically presented in an online educational format through continuing education courses. Dr. Maybee hosts “Forward, The Podcast of the Forward-Thinking Chiropractic Alliance.”  A 2004 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College, he is a member of the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners Peer Review Committee and a member and supporter of the American Chiropractic Association.


 

Dr. Donald Murphy

Donald R. Murphy, DC, FRCC, is a chiropractor by background and a Primary Spine Practitioner by practice, with over 30 years of clinical experience. Dr. Murphy has implemented and overseen an integrated, interdisciplinary spine care pathway that focuses on primary spine care, including for two programs in Rhode Island.  With his team at Spine Care Partners, he has also put this spine care pathway in place in various hospital systems and healthcare communities. Dr. Murphy is clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh, professor, part-time university faculty at Southern California University of Health Sciences and adjunct associate professor at New York Chiropractic College. He lectures throughout the world on various topics related to primary spine care. Dr. Murphy has nearly 100 peer-reviewed journal publications and book chapters. His two-volume book, Clinical Reasoning in Spine Pain, is the required text for Primary Spine Practitioner training.  

 

Dr. Morgan Price

Morgan Price, DC, is a staff chiropractor at VA Puget Sound Health Care System located in Seattle, Washington. She was the inaugural chiropractic resident at this facility from 2020-2021 and was subsequently the first chiropractor hired on at their main hospital in Seattle. She has enjoyed helping to trail-blaze the new department at her location and working alongside other providers in a true interdisciplinary fashion. She also enjoys her time spent working with the chiropractic resident. Dr. Price graduated from National University of Health Sciences in 2019, attending both the Illinois and Florida campuses, as well as completing an eight-month clerkship at Bay Pines VA. After graduating, she was hired on as a per diem provider prior to her residency. She remains active within the profession as part of the leadership team at Forward Thinking Chiropractic Alliance and enjoys volunteering with NextGen ACA. Within the VA, she participates in the Rehab Care Services “Movement is Medicine” program alongside the PM&R physicians. She also enjoys participating in scholarly work including publishing, peer-reviewing, and presenting research as well as presenting internally to other VA departments on evidence-based chiropractic care. Professionally, she is interested in low-tech rehab, Whole Health, and patient/provider communication and motivational interviewing.

 

Dr. Kevin Sharp

Kevin M. Sharp, DC, has over 30 years of experience as a chiropractic physician and has been a member of ACA for over 20 years. Dr. Sharp runs a successful practice in Winston Salem, NC (Sharp Chiropractic), and is a recognized expert in coding, documentation, and compliance. He previously served as North Carolina Chiropractic Association president and currently serves as a member of the ACA Coding Advisory Board. He has spoken at several ACA conferences and offered training on the topics of coding and documentation at various state chiropractic events throughout the nation.

 

 

Dr, Austin Sheldon

Austin Sheldon, PT, DPT, DSc(c), OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT, is a residency and fellowship-trained orthopedic manual/manipulative physical therapist with over 13 years of clinical experience. He has presented at the state level on intractable headache management as well as differential diagnosis of ankle/foot pathology from lumbar spine pathology. On the national level, he has presented on adverse events from manual therapy, upper lumbar spine pathology, adolescent hip pathology, and assessment of vital signs by outpatient physical therapists. Dr. Sheldon has served as a regional director of clinical excellence, as well as a multi-site director for a national outpatient physical therapy company. Additionally, Dr. Sheldon has developed and taught courses for an outpatient physical therapy corporation with content including therapeutic exercise progression, foot/ankle assessment and intervention, and manual therapy intervention to the spine and peripheral joints. He is an active clinician, working for Crossover Health in a tech-enabled, direct-to-employer interdisciplinary clinic in Detroit, Michigan.  

 

Dr. John Stites

John S. Stites, DC, recently retired from Palmer College of Chiropractic as a professor and the Director of Clinics. He has a DC degree and has diplomates in Radiology and Orthopedics. He has worked as an editor, editorial board member and peer reviewer for several publications including the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association and Spine. He has provided chiropractic care in an interdisciplinary Community Health Care center. Dr. Stites has served as the chair of the Chiropractic Health Care section of the American Public Health Association and has spent many years on the Governing Council. He has participated in advisory councils for the Iowa Department of Public Health as well as for managed care organizations. For the past seven years he was invited to be a tutor in the seminal workshop in Evidence-Based Clinical Practice at McMaster University. Dr. Stites has developed multiple workshops and programs on evidence-based clinical practice and has lectured extensively on the subject for chiropractors and complementary and integrative practitioners. A 1979 Palmer graduate, he had also been on faculty from 1983-2020.  

 

Dr. Maithy Ta

Maithy B. Ta, DC, is a practicing chiropractor at MyoCore located in Truman Medical Center in downtown Kansas City, where she helps patients of all ages meet their pain-free functional goals. She enjoys working within a multidisciplinary atmosphere and helping advocate for her patients throughout the hospital. She graduated with honors from Cleveland University-Kansas City and from the University of Kansas with a degree in Human Biology. She remains active within the profession by being a member of the Missouri Chiropractic Physicians Association, a part of the leadership team at the Forward-Thinking Chiropractic Alliance, the current vice-chair of NextGenACA, and a member of the ACA’s Medicare Advisory Board. She is a fierce advocate for the profession both locally and on Capitol Hill and most enjoys helping to build communities and networks for progressive chiropractors who are evidence-based, collaborative, and person-centered. Over the course of her career, she has completed over 300 hours in functional rehab, adjunct therapies, and pain science to continue growing as a clinician. 

 

Dr. Cliff Tao

Cliff Tao, DC, DACBR, has owned and operated a nationwide private chiropractic radiology practice since 2004. Following graduation from National University of Health Sciences in Chicago, Dr. Tao completed his three-year full-time radiology residency at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) and then a full-time musculoskeletal radiology research fellowship at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Calif.. He is an internationally sought-after speaker and is published both in chiropractic and medical literature on the topic of chiropractic, spine, and musculoskeletal imaging. Dr. Tao was former voluntary faculty at LACC and former voluntary instructor of radiology at UCI Medical Center. He is an American Chiropractic Association and World Federation of Chiropractic member.  

 

 

Dr. Shawn Thistle

Shawn Thistle, DC, is a practicing chiropractor (Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College - Class of 2004), educator, international speaker, knowledge-transfer leader, evidence-based health care advocate, entrepreneur and medicolegal consultant. He founded RRS Education in 2006 and currently acts as the company’s CEO. RRS Education helps chiropractors integrate evidence into chiropractic patient care via weekly research reviews and convenient, affordable, and evidence-based continuing education options. Dr. Thistle also serves on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Chiropractic Guideline Initiative and the Research Committee for the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation. In addition to running RRS Education and seeing patients, Dr. Thistle also provides expert medicolegal reporting in chiropractic malpractice cases and lectures part-time at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (in Toronto, Canada) in the Orthopedics Department.

 

Dr. Robert Vining

Robert Vining, DC, is a professor and the associate dean of clinical research at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa. He is a graduate of Logan University (Doctor of Chiropractic) and Jefferson College of Health Sciences (Doctor of Health Science). His professional experience includes private practice and serving as a teaching clinician at two chiropractic colleges. Dr. Vining has served as co-investigator on numerous federally funded clinical studies including those conducted within U.S. Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defense health systems. He was co-principal investigator on a series of studies focused on integrating chiropractic care into a rehabilitation specialty hospital and a trial assessing fascial mobility in persons with chronic low back pain. Dr. Vining is a lead or co-author on over 45 peer reviewed scientific journal articles, two book chapters, and other publications related to chiropractic care and education. A 2018 Palmer College of Chiropractic Outstanding Faculty of the Year awardee, he is also the recipient of the 2019 American Chiropractic Association Academician of the Year award. 

 

Dr. James Walters

James D. Walters, DC, graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2011 with a BFA in dance. As a professional dancer he has performed in nearly 100 countries across five continents. Dr. Walters has performed in both concert and commercial work, dancing a variety of styles ranging from theater to classical ballet. Besides performing, Dr. Walters has worked as a dance teacher, choreographer, and stage combat coordinator. In 2019, he graduated from the New York Chiropractic College. Dr. Walters has been an active member in both the American Chiropractic Association and the New York State Chiropractic Association since beginning his chiropractic education. In the past, he has served as the national chair for the Student American Chiropractic Association and currently serves as a member of the Leadership Committee for NextGen ACA, as well as the district 15 president and affiliate director for the New York State Chiropractic Association. Dr. Walters' passion is combining his former career as an artist with his career as a healthcare provider to create greater understanding and care for artists. He has guest lectured with dance studios, universities, and professional companies to help performing artists achieve healthy and sustainable careers.
