Anthem Misrepresents ACA Position in Advertisement
An advertisement purchased by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and published in three Kentucky newspapers on March 8 uses a policy of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) to defend its position against a pro-chiropractic bill under consideration in the state senate. ACA, however, had no part in the creation of the ad and was never consulted by Anthem regarding its position on the bill.
ACA believes the advertisement takes its policy out of context and is misleading to readers. The association sent letters to the editors of the Lexington Herald Leader, the Louisville Courier Journal and the Owensboro Messenger Inquirer newspapers clarifying its position.
The bill, SB 157, was submitted on behalf of members of the chiropractic profession in Kentucky to address patient access to chiropractic care and reimbursement for doctors of chiropractic. The issues the bill targets have persisted for more than six years in Kentucky.
“ACA works tirelessly to protect the interests of doctors of chiropractic and their patients,” said ACA President Dr. Rick McMichael. “We do not take it lightly when ACA’s positions are misrepresented. ACA supports Senate Bill157 in Kentucky on behalf of its members and the rest of the chiropractic community in that state.”
ACA is the largest chiropractic organization in the United States, representing more than 15,000 doctors of chiropractic and students.
