ACA Responds to OIG Report on Chiropractic Documentation in Medicare
ACA President David A. Herd, DC, issued the following statement in response to the HHS Office of the Inspector General’s latest report on chiropractic documentation:
“The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is committed to reducing waste and improving the quality of care in the Medicare system. We have proactively worked to address documentation requirements within the chiropractic profession for the past several years. The OIG’s latest report includes data from 2013. The 2013 data does not account for many of our most recent successful efforts in this area. ACA representatives have traveled around the country to work with individual doctors, state associations and Medicare Administrative Carriers to address the documentation of chiropractic care. The most recent data reveals that those efforts have had positive results. ACA has developed a comprehensive e-training series to better educate the chiropractic profession on proper Medicare documentation. We have met with Medicare carriers to increase their understanding of our profession’s approach to evidenced based patient care.
“Congress addressed this issue in 2015, passing the Medicare Access and Chip Reauthorization Act (MACRA), which contained a provision calling for greater collaboration between CMS, ACA and other chiropractic stakeholders. MACRA has had its desired effect of greater collaboration. ACA has had productive conversations with CMS and the Medicare carriers and our profession since the passage of MACRA. The error rate as a result has come down significantly in many carrier regions this year alone. ACA will continue to address our nation’s demands for quality and value in health care.”
